My name is Yifan Xu, Alicia, and I am currently an exchange student in Madrid, where I grew up, although I am originally from Wenzhou, China. I am pursuing my studies in Graphic Design and Multimedia at UDIT University of Design and Technology in Madrid Spain. This journey has been an incredible opportunity for personal and academic growth, allowing me to explore a different culture while furthering my education in a field I am passionate about.

I decided to participate in this exchange program in China because I wanted to experience university life in a completely different environment from Spain. Although I have always felt a connection to my roots, I was eager to see how a different educational system would shape my learning experience. When I discovered that my university had a partnership with BGD, I was excited. After reviewing their offerings, it became clear to me that BGD was the ideal choice to continue my studies and enhance my skills.

Upon arriving, I was filled with mixed emotions. I felt a bit of anxiety about whether I would be able to fit in and whether the classes would be challenging for me. I worried that the language barrier might hinder my ability to engage fully with the coursework and my peers. However, I quickly found that both the professors and my classmates were incredibly supportive and welcoming. This atmosphere made a significant difference in my adjustment to the new environment. They were always willing to help me navigate any difficulties, whether they were academic or cultural.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my experience at BGD has been the friendships I have formed. I have met some incredible people from various backgrounds, and these connections have enriched my time here. We often collaborate on projects, share ideas, and learn from each other's perspectives. I am grateful to have such a diverse group of friends who support each other both academically and personally.

Moreover, BGD offers classes taught by international professors, which has been a unique and enriching experience. The exposure to different teaching styles and viewpoints has broadened my understanding of design and multimedia. It also fosters a more intercultural learning environment, where students can exchange ideas and learn from one another. This aspect of my education has not only improved my academic skills but has also deepened my appreciation for different cultures and ways of thinking.

As I reflect on my journey so far, I realize how transformative this experience has been. It has encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone and embrace new challenges. I have learned to be more adaptable, open-minded, and proactive in seeking help when needed.

For future exchange students, my advice is to embrace every moment with an open heart and mind. Don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone, it is often where the most growth occurs. Make an effort to engage with your peers, participate in activities, and ask questions whenever you have doubts. Every challenge you encounter is an opportunity for learning and self-improvement.
